Dr. Nelson was born on the Island of Jamaica and emigrated to the US with his family at the age of 7. He grew up in the state of New Jersey, with hardworking parents, who fostered the importance of being dedicated to your craft while giving back to others. He attended Andrews University in Michigan, where he studied religion and chemistry. Dr. Nelson attended Loma Linda University for dental school and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon society. He was a recipient of the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) scholarship and spent four years working in community health dental clinics here in North Carolina, serving the underserved.
After four years of general dentistry, he decided to pursue additional training in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. While in training, Dr. Nelson pursued his medical degree from the University of North Carolina school of medicine and is a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He also completed a year of training in general surgery. During his final year of training, Dr. Nelson served as chief resident and was primarily responsible for resident education. He is indebted to his parents, the residents and faculty that helped him become the surgeon he is today.
Dr. Nelson’s areas of interest include maxillofacial reconstruction and restoration, and serves the community by incorporating dental implants, orthognathic (jaw) surgery, cosmetic surgery, cleft and craniofacial surgery, pathology, and nerve repair into his practice. Dr. Nelson is heavily involved in his local church and enjoys mission trips and giving back to the community.
He is married to his high school sweetheart, Karie, and they have two boys, Micaiah and Malachi. When not in the hospital or office you’ll find him spending time with his family and friends, playing/watching basketball (Go Heels!) or reading the latest car reviews.
