TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are a family of problems that relate to the jawbone and can potentially contribute to chronic pain and discomfort. Several treatments may provide TMJ relief, from pharmaceutical interventions, physical therapy, modification daily habits, and occlusal splints to TMJ surgery. At Southern Dental Implants & Oral Surgery, our team has significant experience working with TMJ disorders, restoring total health and high quality of life. If you live with TMJ pain, we invite you to schedule a consultation to learn more about different courses of treatment.

Symptoms of a TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorders can manifest with several different symptoms. Some of the most common TMJ symptoms include:

  • Grinding and clenching of your teeth
  • Chronically sore, stiff jaw muscles
  • Frequent headaches and neck aches
  • Jaw clicking, popping, catching, or grating when you open your mouth
  • Discomfort yawning or opening your mouth
  • Teeth that no longer touch when you bite
  • Jaw clenching or pain that gets worse with stress

Treatment Options

There is a whole spectrum of treatment options available to treat TMJ disorders. Following an initial consultation and examination, we usually recommend beginning with a more conservative treatment option, such as steroid injections, pain medications, or physical therapy.

For more extreme cases, or when these more conservative treatments don’t work. Using minimally-aggressive methods and open joint treatments, we can provide relief from TMJ disorder symptoms and improve function.
